Our Top 5 Curb Appeal Tips

Our Top 5 Curb Appeal Tips

The fall season is a wonderful time of year for many reasons. The smell of apple cider, walking through crunchy leaves and ogling at your neighbours’ Halloween décor. If you’re planning on selling in the fall, it’s also an optimal time of year to step up your curb appeal. Here are our top 5 tips to boost your home’s curb appeal in the fall.

  1. Fall-ify Your Garden
The dropping temperature doesn’t permit you to drop the ball on gardening. Even in these
cooler months, you can improve your home’s appearance by planting flowers and seasonal
foliage. Some of our favourite fall flowers to plant are chrysanthemums, violas, marigolds, and pansies.
  2. Style Your Front Porch
Your front door is the focal point of your home’s exterior. All design elements lead visitors to the front door, and your fall décor can contribute to that. We love seeing a clean front porch with a couple of hay bales on either side of the door with some pumpkins. If you’re looking to really take your curb appeal up a notch, consider painting your front door and window shutters. Deep burgundy, navy blue, or brown look stunning in the fall.
  3. Stay On Top of Exterior Maintenance
With the fall season comes a whole slew of extra yard duties to stay on top of. We recommend blowing fallen leaves off your driveway and walkway. Some leaves on the front lawn look aesthetically pleasing, so don’t worry about getting rid of all of them until the trees are completely bare.

Check your gutters a couple of times this season to remove leaves and other debris from the trees. You should also remove leaves and debris from your flower beds and pots as well as any crevices between concrete and the lawn.
  4. Add (and Clean) Light Fixtures
The days are getting shorter and the nights longer, which means exterior lighting is becoming more important. Make sure you have enough outdoor lighting fixtures to ensure your address and walkways are visible at night. You may want to install solar lights on either side of your walkway and perhaps new sconces on either side of the front door.

Remember to clean your lighting fixtures between seasons. The light bulbs and hardware likely accumulated dirt and cobwebs over the summer, so take a wet cloth to wipe them off.
  5. Maintain the Landscape
Every fall, it’s important to take care of your home’s landscape so it is prepared for the harsh winter months and primed to regrow in the spring. One task we recommend is pruning your trees and bushes. Not only does this make the bushes and trees look well-maintained, but it takes away the materials rodents like to use for nests. Consider adding new mulch around the bases of your trees and bushes to help keep the roots warm over winter.
