Neighbourhoods of Hamilton

With arguably some of the most charming residential streets in Hamilton, Durand is one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in Hamilton to live, with its distinct character, and thriving shops and restaurants. A fantastic location for commuters looking to take the train; the Hamilton GO station borders on Durand.

 Bounded by Main Street West, James Street South, the Escarpment and Queen Street South, approximately 12,000 Hamiltonians call Durand home. 

Kirkendall is a vibrant area with no shortage of restaurants and shops on both Locke and Dundurn Street. While predominantly a combination of housing and businesses there are also a few great little pockets for outdoor recreation, including the Hill Street dog park and community garden, and the Hamilton Amateur Athletic Association which has a running track, basketball and tennis courts, a playground, and a football field.

Walking distance to a plethora of shopping, restaurants, bars, grocery stores; this area truly offers the village atmosphere, accommodating people on foot or bikes, and in cars and buses.

The Delta and Crown Point neighbourhood has been one of the most sought after neighbourhoods in Hamilton for the past few years. Featuring the lively Ottawa Street Shopping District, which is quickly becoming the go-to place for small businesses to set up shop. You’ll find great coffee shops, antique and textile stores, and plenty of restaurants along the strip. Live a pedestrian-friendly, urban lifestyle in the Delta/Crown Point neighbourhood! This neighbourhood remains seriously affordable for many young families who are moving to the area due to the affordability, amenities, easy access to transit, mature trees, and charming homes.

This neighbourhood is home to our CFL team, the Hamilton Tiger Cats, with the new stadium being built in 2014. The Tim Horton’s Field sits in the centre of this largely residential area, and hosts events such as the Pan Am Games in 2015 and the Arkell’s Rally in 2018, which was attended by an estimated 24,000 people. Gage Park is also a short walk away, providing an amazing green space, complete with the newly renovated tropical greenhouse. Converted industrial spaces such as the Cotton Factory are a sure sign that this area is on the rise. If you are alright with the commotion of TiCat game days, this area is definitely worth checking out.

One of Hamilton’s oldest neighbourhoods, Corktown was founded by Hamilton’s early Irish settlers who lived and worked here on the TH&B Railway which passes through the neighbourhood and now serves as the Hamilton GO Centre. Corktown contains a large grouping of pubs along Augusta Street, which has more of a 25+ vibe; a refreshing alternative to the Hess Village club district. Shamrock, Corktown, and Woolverton Park provide the area with some nice green space for leisure and recreation. The Stinson neighbourhood sits just east of Corktown and is famous for being nestled up against the base of the escarpment, featuring many large character homes.

 The Beasley/Landsdale area is known for its hip shops, restaurants and cafes and has been undergoing a transformation in recent years, including the rejuvenated waterfront area at Pier 8 and business improvement investments along James Street North and Barton Street. The homes in this area are rather densely packed, with many beautiful brick late Victorian townhouses making up a large section of these neighbourhoods. Dr. Disc, Sonic Unyon, Mills Hardware, Absinthe, and Cheapies Records are all within Beasley/Landsale making it somewhat of a hub for Hamilton’s music scene. There is no shortage of things to do, and places to check out in this vibrant area.

 Largely considered the arts and culture hub of Hamilton, this neighbourhood has garnered increasing amounts of spotlight since the creation of Supercrawl, a four day event that shuts down James Street North for pedestrians which draws an estimated 220,000+ attendees yearly. There is also Art Crawl which takes place on the second Friday of every month. The street is filled with great restaurants, bars, and shops, and is a fantastic area to spend an afternoon. Hess Village is also within the borders of this neighbourhood. During the day there are some fantastic patios to grab a beer and a snack; at night however, it’s the club district for students.

 Recent years have seen a revitalization of the North End, making it one of the trendy and up-and-coming neighbourhoods in Hamilton. The new North Harbour GO train line, as well as easy access to the QEW via Nikola Tesla, and highway 403 via York Boulevard makes it a fantastic area for commuters. Walkability to James Street and the downtown core from this largely residential area makes it a great place for pedestrians as well. The waterfront is home to many events, including free concerts weekly through the summer at Pier 4, roller skating at Pier 8’s outdoor rink.

A mostly residential pocket that features easy walking distance to not only all of downtown, but also the Locke Street area and Hess Village. Victoria Park is a large sports park with a variety of activities, including a playground, a large hardball diamond, swimming and wading pools, tennis and multi-purpose courts, and a Community Garden, all of which is surrounded by a paved running track with work-out stations. There is also a dog park in this area: a large, open fenced field behind the Fortinos plaza. Easy access to a grocery store, a 24 hours Shoppers, a fantastic yoga studio it is definitely easy to be a pedestrian in this area.
