Why Millennials Are Choosing to Move to Hamilton

Over the past 10 years, Hamilton has grown in popularity with everyone from retirees to young families. One group in particular has decided to flock to this amazing city: millennials. They now make up the largest generation group in Hamilton bringing with them a passion for environmental sustainability, the tech industry, and an appreciation for small town charm.  Of all the southwestern Ontario cities to choose from, here’s why most 26-40-year-olds are choosing Hamilton.

The Abundance of Affordable Real Estate

The prices of homes in and around the GTA have continued to rise over the past few years. However, Hamilton is still one of the most affordable cities despite the overall increase in prices. As of February 2020, the average house price in Toronto was $910,290. In Hamilton, it was $646,667. Even millennials who work in Toronto are opting to buy in Hamilton and make the commute.

Big City with a Small-Town Vibe

Millennials get the best of both worlds in Hamilton. The downtown core of Hamilton is always booming and vibrant. There’s plenty of entertainment, night life, and community events. Like Toronto, it has ample shopping and amenities. But unlike Toronto, Hamilton maintains a small-town vibe. Historic buildings are maintained, ma and pa shops line the streets, and you can find an independent coffee shop, bookstore, or vintage clothing shop on every corner. Specifically, the Delta and Crown Point neighbourhood boasts authentic charm with lots of green space.

Access to Everywhere

Hamilton has easy access to every southwestern Ontario city due to its proximity to all the major highways. To get to Mississauga and Toronto, take the 403 or 407 highways. For Kitchener and Cambridge, hop on the 8. Niagara and St. Catharines are easy to access as well via the 20 and 81 highways.

Millennials who want to do some soul searching on a backpacking trip or volunteer abroad appreciate that Hamilton also has its own international airport.

Proximity to Nature

Millennials spend more time in the great outdoors than any other generational group. Getting fresh air is important for mental wellness as well as quality of life. Hamilton boasts an excessive number of parks and green spaces, making it the perfect home for outdoor enthusiasts.

The Niagara Escarpment runs through Hamilton, with its highest points in this area being 100 metres high. Aside from the hiking trails along the escarpment, Hamilton also has some amazing outdoor attractions: Devil’s Punchbowl Conservation Area, Bayfront Park, Tiffany Falls Conservation Area, Albion Falls and many more.

Home to 5 Universities and Colleges

Hamilton’s 5 state-of-the-art universities and colleges attract thousands of students each year. Many of these students enjoy the campus and the city so much that they decide to stay after graduation. Since more jobs are created in Hamilton each year, with a 4% growth in jobs from 2018 to 2019, there are plenty of opportunities for them. Graduates who are ready to start their careers can do so in this booming and prosperous city.
